First Day of Chariot Construction Work
Date: 24.04.2023, Monday
Location: Ratha Khala (Chariot Yard)
The first day of chariot construction began auspiciously on the sacred occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. After performing the necessary rituals, the chariot-making servitors gathered at the Ratha Khala by 8:00 AM.
Attendance of Servitors:
Chief carpenters (Maharana) for the three chariots: 9
Woodworkers (Bhoi sevaks) for the three chariots: 6
Measuring experts (Karati sevaks) for the three chariots: 4
Blacksmiths (Kamara sevaks) for the three chariots: 6
Ratha Khala assistant (water supplier): 1
Total: 26 personnel
Progress of Chariot Construction:
The Karati Sevaks began by shaping and measuring the selected sacred logs (Phasi wood) for the construction of the three chariots:
Taladhwaja Chariot
Darpadalana Chariot
Nandighosha Chariot
They prepared two Tumba (cylindrical logs) for each chariot using precise measurements.
Following this, the chief carpenters (Maharana) marked the circular outlines on the logs. Then, using traditional tools like Barisi (axe), they shaped one Tumba for each chariot to serve as the foundational part of the chariot floor.
Meanwhile, the Kamara Sevaks (blacksmiths) also prepared the temporary Kamara Shaala (forge/workshop) near the Dolabedi to begin forging the necessary metal components (called Kanta) for the three chariots. They completed the Shaala Puja (ritual worship of the workshop) to commence their work.
