Manabasa Gurubar in Odia Culture

December 20, 2023 100 0 Comment

Kakatpur (Tushar Dixit), Dated 20/12 – Today is the fourth and final Thursday of the month of Margasira. Maa Lakshmi, the divine consort of Lord Jagannath and the goddess of wealth and prosperity, is specially worshipped on this day. According to Odia tradition, among the Ashta Lakshmis (eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi), Dhanya Lakshmi (goddess of grain) is specifically venerated on the Thursdays of the Margasira month.

On this day, harvested paddy and grains are worshipped as Dhanya Lakshmi. Among all the festivals celebrated in Odia households, Manabasa Gurubar holds a unique and special place. While Lakshmi Puja is widely observed across the Hindu community, Manabasa Gurubar in the month of Margasira is an exclusive and intimate festival of the Odia people. Thursdays in this month are considered sacred and are dedicated to Maa Lakshmi.

From Brahmins to the so-called lower castes, every Odia household observes this festival. There are no divisions of caste or creed in this worship. Each Thursday of Margasira, the goddess is invited into the homes through traditional rituals.

On this day, Odia housewives decorate their homes in customary ways using jhoti (rice paste art), chita (floor decorations), dhana shisha (paddy grains), and anguli chita (finger-painted motifs). The offerings (prasad) prepared for the goddess also reflect the unique and traditional culinary heritage of the Odias.

The festive meal typically includes leafy greens, fried vegetables, curd rice (dahi pakhala), sweet dishes, ambila (sour soup), sarapuli (sweet pancake), atkali (thick rice pudding), arisa pitha (rice cake), besara (vegetable curry with mustard), mahura (vegetable stew), manda (stuffed rice cake), chhena-nadia-stuffed kakara pitha, and more – all of which are rarely found outside an Odia household.

Maa Lakshmi is envisioned as the ideal housewife. Since ancient times, she has been revered as the symbol of wealth, affection, compassion, kindness, and forgiveness.

Every Odia home observes the Manabasa Gurubar vrata (vow/ritual) with great devotion and discipline throughout the month of Margasira. This festival clearly reflects the rich social and spiritual heritage of the Odia people.
