Unique Tradition of Gahma Purnima: The Bullfight Competition
Sakhigopal in Puri district is renowned across India for its native bulls, and during the Gahma Purnima festival, a traditional bullfight competition is held. This custom has been practiced here since ancient times. In this event, two bulls are pitted against each other in a face-to-face fight. The bull whose horn breaks or who gives up is considered defeated. The winner takes the broken horn of the defeated bull as a token of victory.
Hundreds of spectators gather to watch the competition, some clapping, others waving their towels or cheering loudly to encourage the contestants, making it a festive and enjoyable event.
The bullfights take place at several locations near the Sakhigopal Temple, including Dolabedi Chhak, Jayapur Bus Stand, Pattanaikia, Barala Hariabudha, Sarangajodi Haat, Gabakunda, and Alagum Sukalara Chhak. The participating bulls are desi (native) bulls raised by local farmers, who prepare and preserve their best bulls throughout the year for this special day. This competition gives them a chance to showcase the strength and quality of their bulls.
This age-old tradition is observed during the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan. In the Sakhigopal region, famous for its native bulls, the excitement around this traditional bullfight is palpable. Young men from nearby Panchkoshi areas travel to the Sakhigopal temple vicinity to participate in the event. The competition typically runs from 4 PM to 8 PM, and by the end, the victorious youths return home happily with bags full of rewards, proud of their bulls’ performance.
