Today on Dhanteras, Efforts Made to Please the Goddess of Wealth
Kakatpur: 30/10/2024
As Dhanteras is observed over two days, while the markets remained relatively quiet yesterday, today saw a noticeable hustle and bustle. People with money in their pockets were seen visiting gold jewellery stores to make purchases, whereas those from lower-middle-class families were seen buying items such as brooms, brass plates, silver coins, cowries, and new clothes.
Although Dhanteras is not originally a traditional festival of Odisha, people here still believe that buying certain items on this day pleases Goddess Lakshmi. The festival falls just before the auspicious Diwali Amavasya (new moon). It is said that bringing specific items into the home today invites prosperity and blessings.
Nobody wants to miss the opportunity of this auspicious day. Those who can afford it, go to jewellery stores with their homemakers to buy gold ornaments. Those with limited means buy a broom to symbolically satisfy their minds and hearts. Others purchase items like grains or cowries to celebrate the occasion with contentment and devotion.
