In the by-election held for the Samiti Member position in Talada Panchayat under Astaranga block of Puri district, the BJD-supported candidate, Amiya Kumar Sethi, emerged victorious. He defeated his nearest rival, Sukanta Kumar Sethi, by a margin of 210 votes. Amiya Sethi secured 1,537 votes from 16 wards, while Sukanta Sethi received 1,327 votes.
This election had turned into a matter of prestige for local MLA and Minister of State for Sports and Home, Tusharkanti Behera, and Puri Zilla Parishad Vice-Chairman Swadhin Kumar Nayak. According to Nayak, the people of Talada played a crucial role in honoring the legacy of former minister Surendra Nath Nayak by fulfilling his commitments and upholding Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s image of integrity, thus ensuring a win for the BJD candidate.
Voters favored the clean governance and pure image of the Chief Minister, which contributed to the BJD-backed candidate’s victory. Despite efforts from leaders of Congress, BJP, and the Milita Manch (United Front), who had set up base and tried various strategies to help Sukanta Sethi win, their efforts fell short.
BJD Astaranga Block President Kedar Nath Bishwal brought serious allegations, stating that BJD’s former MLA Sura Sethi, despite being in the party, collaborated with the opposition in a conspiracy to defeat the BJD candidate, which ultimately failed.
All related information regarding the issue will be formally submitted in writing to the State President Naveen Patnaik and Puri District President, according to Mr. Bishwal’s statement to the media.
Following Amiya’s victory, BJD workers, supporters, and leaders celebrated with great enthusiasm in Talada Panchayat and Astaranga. A similar celebration took place at the Astaranga BJD office.
