Vibrant Celebrations at Sakhigopal Temple on the Auspicious Occasion of Janmashtami
Today marks the sacred festival of Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Shri Krishna. The Sakhigopal Temple in Puri district is abuzz with celebration and devotion. According to legend, Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadraba. He was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in the prison of the tyrant King Kansa. To protect the divine child from Kansa, Vasudeva secretly took Krishna to Gokul, where he was raised as the beloved Nandalal.
On this occasion, a grand celebration is taking place at the Sakhigopal Temple. At midnight, Lord Gopal’s birth ritual (Janmaniti) will be performed with special customs and traditions. The priests will conduct sacred rituals with chants of the five-syllable mantra, offering divine services (Upacharas) to the Lord. The temple servitors play various important roles in these spiritual ceremonies.
From 4 AM today, after the temple doors opened, thousands of devotees have been arriving to have darshan of Lord Sakhigopal and Goddess Radharani, following all traditional rituals.
The temple servitors’ association has also organized a Vishwashanti Mahayajna (Great Ritual for World Peace) and a variety of cultural programs to mark the occasion. Devotees from across the country have flocked to the temple, offering prayers and returning home with spiritual joy and Janmashtami prasad.
