‘Date of Manufacture’ Now Mandatory on Packaging
It will now be easier to know how old a packaged item is at the time of purchase. The Central Government has made it mandatory to mention the ‘Date of Manufacture’ on product packaging. Previously, this was optional. Starting from the new year, it will be compulsory to include details about the date of manufacture and the weight of each item inside the package.
A notification regarding this has been issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. Since packets of varying weights are sold in stores, if consumers know the exact weight of the item inside, they can make informed decisions accordingly, said Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh.
For example, if a 2.5 kg packet of flour is being sold, the company will have to mention the price per kg and the maximum retail price (MRP) on the package. Similarly, if the weight of the item in the package is less than one kilogram, then the per-gram price must also be clearly stated.
