Report: Tushar Dixit
At the sacred seat of Goddess Maa Mangala, the presiding deity of Kakatpur, the annual Shodasha Upachara (sixteen-step) Puja has begun from today. The ritual commenced following the conclusion of the Sahasra Kumbhabhisheka, a grand purification and ceremonial bathing of the deity.
From the sacred well located within the temple premises, water was drawn in 108 traditional copper pots by the temple servitors and Gurukarnas. The collected water was poured into a large brass vessel and mixed with camphor, sandalwood paste, honey, raw milk, Ganga water, flowers, bel leaves, jayetree, nutmeg, and various other fragrant items. This holy mixture was then sanctified through the chanting of sacred mantras.
After the purification, the specially designated Shodasha Upachara Pujapandas took a religious vow (Sankalpa) and began the ceremonial bath (Snana) of the deity. This sacred day is eagerly awaited every year by the devotees of Maa Mangala. Accompanied by the sounds of traditional instruments like gongs, bells, pakhawaj, and kahali, the ritual bath is performed with utmost devotion.
Upon notification from the Mangala Temple Trust Board and the Temple Advisory Committee, devotees were allowed to witness this rare ritual up close from the Simha Dwara (Lion Gate). None of the devotees wanted to miss this exceptional darshan.
Among all the rituals of the Sharadiya festival observed at the temple, this one is considered truly unique. After the sacred bath, Maa Mangala is adorned with various gold ornaments donated by devotees such as chokers, bangles, anklets, armbands, lotus pendants, and crescent-shaped jewels.
Following this, the independent Sharadiya Shola Puja begins at Maa Mangala’s seat, continuing from Moolashtami to Mahashtami for sixteen days. The entire worship is conducted by a specially appointed group of Shodasha Upachara Pujapandas.
During the commencement of the rituals, trustee Ankita Anandita was present. Executive Officer Kailash Chandra Das and members of the Temple Advisory Committee were also in attendance.
